How to Choose the Right Wedding Photographer in Birmingham & the West Midlands

i have been wanting to write this blog for some time. I figure this is the right time to write it to help couples out in choosing your ideal photographer. Planning your wedding is an exciting journey, but choosing the right photographer can feel overwhelming. Your wedding photos will become some of the most treasured memories from your day, so finding someone who understands your vision is incredibly important. If you're currently searching for a wedding photographer in Birmingham or the West Midlands, here are 7 helpful tips to guide you in making the right decision.

1. Choose a Photography Style That Matches Your Vision

Every wedding photographer has a different style. Before contacting photographers, spend some time looking through galleries and deciding what style resonates with you.

Common wedding photography styles include:

Documentary / natural photography – capturing real moments as they happen

Traditional photography – classic posed portraits

2. Look at Full Wedding Galleries (Not Just Instagram)

Instagram highlights are always great, but they don’t always tell the whole story.

When researching photographers, ask to see full wedding galleries. This allows you to see how they photograph the entire day. From the bridal preparations to the evening celebrations.

A strong wedding photographer will show:

  • Consistency throughout the day

  • Ability to work in different lighting conditions

  • Beautiful storytelling across hundreds of images

This is especially important when weddings move between locations such as registry offices, churches, and reception venues around Birmingham and the West Midlands.

3. Read Reviews and Testimonials from real couples

Reviews from past couples can give you valuable insight into what it’s like to work with a photographer.

Look for feedback about things such as:

  • Communication and organisation

  • How comfortable the photographer made the couple feel

  • Professionalism on the day

  • The final quality of the photos

Your photographer will spend a lot of time with you on your wedding day, so choosing someone with a great reputation and friendly personality is important.

All my reviews are on Facebook, Google and Trustpilot! :)

4. Choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable

Many couples say they feel nervous about being photographed.

The right photographer will help you relax and enjoy the moment rather than feeling like you're constantly posing. They even treat you like you have been friends with them for ages!!!!!! They might even attempt to take a fun selfie! Lol

But on a more serious note, before you book, try to:

  • Arrange a video call or meeting in person (if local)

  • Ask questions about their approach. To understand my approach with couples, feel free to visit my approach page here.

  • Discuss your wedding plans and timeline

When you feel comfortable with your photographer, it naturally leads to more genuine and beautiful photos.

5. Understand What’s Included in the Package

Wedding photography packages can vary a lot, so it’s important to understand exactly what’s included. Things to check should typically include:

  • Hours of coverage

  • Deposit

  • Number of photos delivered

  • Editing style

  • Delivery time

  • Albums or prints

Please make sure everything is clearly outlined so there are no surprises later with your photographer.

Please visit my wedding photography packages here to discover what I offer.

6. Book Early

Popular wedding photographers often book 12–24 months in advance, especially for peak wedding season dates. If you find a photographer whose work you love, it’s a good idea to enquire as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

7. Trust Your Instincts

Finally, trust your instincts. I know it is easier said than done. But if you truly love a photographer’s work, feel comfortable talking with them, and can imagine them being part of your wedding day. You’re probably making the right choice. I always make my clients comfortable and i do my best to always accomodate to their request. A photographer in my opinion should treat you like they have been friends with you throughout your lifetime.

Your wedding photos will become one of the most important keepsakes from your day, so it’s worth taking the time to find a photographer who truly feels like the perfect fit.
